Chinese New Year Pudding 年糕

A favourite for my children not just at Chinese New Year, but all year round. 2025 the year of snake will land on 29th January 2025, and my kids have already easy one of these by 10th January.

The Chinese new year pudding (Nin-Go in Cantonese; Nian-Gao in Mandarin) is a very traditional dessert eaten around Chinese New Year. The pudding is usually cut into slices (just under 1cm thick) and pan fried before serving hot. With a crispy outside, and a soft chewy inside, it’s perfect for a cold winter. Why not serve with one of our ice-cream as well for a perfect finish to a new year meal.

In Chinese, 年糕 (nián gāo) sounds like “年高,” which means “higher year” or “year after year”. This symbolises growth, progress, and prosperity. Eating nin go during the New Year is believed to bring good luck, success, and advancement in the coming year.
